Ted has been a member of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC) since 2015. AFCC is an organization of family law lawyers, judges, and psychotherapists who study and discuss through continuing education the subject of family law. Ted attends many online seminars and in person conferences annually, where attorneys, psychotherapists, and judges present cutting edge information on a wide variety of family law subjects. Being a member of AFCC has helped Ted become much more sophisticated about issues that impact parents and children in the family law arena.
Some of the areas which AFCC presenters routinely address are: how to perform and challenge custody evaluations, reviewing models for good co-parenting, learning about the indicia for intimate partner violence, creating tailor made parenting plans to reduce stress and to act in the best interest of the child, learning what parenting coordination is and how to use it, learning the impact of divorce on neuro-diverse children, learning how divorce impacts a mentally ill parent or child, gaining knowledge about the Hague convention and how it applies to international child abduction, the relocation of parents within the United States, the psychological impact of separating parents and court litigation on children generally, and improving communication between parents.
Ted believes that family law attorneys who are AFCC members are far better able to resolve divorce and child custody disputes than those who simply use the adversarial model. Although very experienced in using the adversarial model in a divorce case, Ted believes that teaching parents how to co-parent is far more effective for all members of the family than exposing the family’s “dirty laundry” before a court and family members. Ted’s approach is to work with opposing counsel in trying to help parents and children navigate through this difficult period of their lives with as little emotional damage to all family members as possible. Otherwise, family law litigation can impact the emotional well-being of parents and children for a lifetime.
